  • I grew up in Kenya at a time of real optimism. We had just come out of years under authoritarian rule, and everything felt possible. New highways stretched out from the Nairobi's city center as proof of progress. But beneath the shine, we were underprepared. Even in a ‘good’ neighborhood, I studied by candlelight more times than I can count. The city looked modern on the outside, but inside it was underinvested and mismanaged. I started wondering what other cities were doing right.

  • At 17, I left for Singapore after researching the world’s most advanced cities and writing a few hopeful scholarship essays. I studied Global Affairs and Computer Science because I wanted to understand power and how data shapes it. Living in a place where infrastructure just worked made the gaps back home impossible to ignore. I didn’t just want to analyze inequality. I wanted to design better systems

  • I eventually realized cities often fail because systems lack capital and coordination. Energy powers everything, and finance decides what gets built. That realization led me to pursue my MPA in Environmental Science and Policy. I wanted to understand the infrastructure beneath the surface including how grids are financed, which projects get approval and how policy shapes investment. If I want to be part of meaningfully transforming how cities like Nairobi function, I need to understand its systems including energy and finance, and the policy frameworks that connect them.
