  • Doctor : A long time ago, in England, a farmer worked on a farm with many cows. The farmers noticed that some milkmaids caught a disease called cowpox from the cows, but they did not seem to get the dangerous disease called smallpox. A doctor named Edward Jenner became very interested in this. He wanted to find out why people who had cowpox seemed protected against smallpox. In 1796, he met a milkmaid named Sarah Nelmes, who had caught cowpox from a cow called Blossom. Jenner used material from her cowpox sore to vaccinate an eight-year-old boy named James Phipps. James became a little sick but recovered. A few weeks later, Jenner discovered that James was protected against smallpox.

  • Doctor : In 1798, Jenner published his discovery, and doctors started using his vaccine to protect more people. Many years later, scientists and doctors around the world continued working to stop smallpox. In 1967, the World Health Organization started a worldwide campaign to vaccinate people against the disease. The last naturally occurring case of smallpox was recorded in 1977. Finally, on 8 May 1980, a news reporter announced the wonderful news: "Good evening, everyone! We have amazing news! Smallpox has officially been eradicated from the world! Thanks to Edward Jenner's discovery and the hard work of doctors and scientists, this dangerous disease no longer exists as a naturally spreading disease anywhere in the world!" Edward Jenner had changed the world forever and helped save millions of lives. The end.
  • Ruby : I'm glad there is no more small pox
