Causes
A message got sent to Mexico saying the United States declared war. During the war Germany planned to sink all the ships, and starve Britain and most likely provoke them to declare war. The Germans redirected the US resources, and also they tried to take advantage and exploit the relationship between the US and Mexico. The biggest cause was because Mexico got their land stolen and Germany tried to set up a deal that if they helped them during the war they would help them get their land back so that's what they did, but they did not get the land back. Germany tried to prevent the US from helping the allies by using illegal submarine warfare to destroy their ships, and pressured Japan to attack the U.S.

Effect
A big effect was intercepting the letter and leading into world war 1. President wison requested that congress declare war on Germany. When we went into the war there were lots of public outbreaks, and protests. During the war many soldiers died and also the British and the US became allies in ww1. The US got mad when they found out Germany sent Mexico to attack them, which ended isolationist sentiments. It provided evidence of germany hostility, uniting American politicians in favor of the war. Many of Germany's plans backfired on them like when they tried to keep the US from going to Europe with the conflict that happened with Mexico, but that backfired and the US joined the war. Mexico rejected the alliance proposal.
