- Cyanide is one of the most potent intracellular and lethal poison known to man.
- It binds to an allosteric site on the enzyme cytochrome oxidase which takes part in respiration reactions in cells.
- If this enzyme is inhibited, ATP cannot be made since the oxygen is decreased.
- The binding of the cyanide to the allosteric site causes a conformation al change to the enzyme’s active site.
- Now, the active site of cytochrome oxidase (enzyme) and its substrate no longer share specificity
- it can no longer catalyze a reaction for ATP production via aerobic respiration.
- Therefore, Cyanide is a Non-competitive inhibitor!
