- Pharaoh Djoser's empire had been devastated by a famine. Pharaoh Djoser traveled to Sehel Island because people there worshipped a God called Khnum, who the Egyptians believed controlled the annual flow of the Nile River.
- If Djoser could see or meet the God in some way, he could pray to him, or talk to him, in some way that would please him, so that he would bring an end to the famine. The legend says that Khnum appeared to Djoser in a dream, and complained about the condition of the shrine made in his honor.
- Pharaoh Djoser constructed a new temple in Khnum’s honor, which brought a miraculous end to the famine.
