- John F. Kennedy's speech happened in front of 120,000 people in front of West Berlin's city hall. The speech he made is one of his most famous. It was two years after the wall had been bulit.
- I am a citizen of Berlin! "Ich bin ein Berliner." The Berlin Wall was not a very kind solution but it is better than war.
- Due to the Berlin Wall being built, people were unable to travel throughout West and East Berlin.
- Now that the wall was built, we are unable to escape to West Berlin from East Berlin. So, now it will be harder to visit our family and friends.
- We will have to travel through checkpoints now. There are only a few since the checkpoints are being turned down.
- I cannot believe this! What are we going to do, Mom and Dad?
- I hope that the East German soldiers will let us travel through even though we are not officials.
- There are 12 checkpoints that are all along the Berlin Wall. There are three main checkpoints and the one we are going to is checkpoint Alpha, also known as Helmstedt.
- The East German soldiers have control over who is allowed to enter or leave and most of the time, it is government officials.
- This is checkpoint "Alpha", also known as Helmstedt which is located at Dreilinden.
- You are not allowed to travel through. You are not an official meaning you do not have the freedom to enter or leave. Now, please leave!
- Please sir, let us travel through!
- Leaving East Germany was not impossible. There were around 5,000 East Germans who had escaped and crossed over the border. Climbing the Berlin Wall and over the barbed wire was one of the ways people were able to escape.
- Dad, are we going to climb the wall to escape?
- Yes, we are going to climb the wall. So, that we can be free and see our family and friends again.
