  • Macbeth arrives with Banquo, the witches greeting startles and seems to frighten Macbeth. They then vanish, and Ross and Angus arrive to tell Macbeth that he has been given the title Thane of Cawdor by Duncan. He then realizes that to become king, Duncan would have to die.

  • King Duncan's son Malcolm reports the execution of Cawdor. Macbeth and Banquo, along with Ross and Angus, join the rest of Duncan’s party. Duncan thanks them both for their part in the battle and announces that his eldest son, will inherit the throne from him when he dies. Macbeth then decides to go on ahead to tell his wife.

  • Lady Macbeth learns of Macbeth's meeting with the witches. She fears that Macbeth is not ruthless enough to murder Duncan and assure the completion of the witches' prophecy. Lady Macbeth makes all of the preparations for the king's visit and subsequent murder.
  • King Duncan arrives at Macbeth's castle, welcomed by Lady Macbeth. Macbeth has doubts about the murder and declares to Lady Macbeth that it should not go ahead. Lady Macbeth persuades Macbeth to go ahead saying they can blame Duncan's attendants.
