The third crusade was known as the crusade of the kings because England, France, and Germany's rulers organized this crusade. It started because of Jerusalem's fall. Richard I of England, and Saladin signed a truce which ended the third crusade. Christian Pilgrims were allowed to travel, and Saladin agreed to give respect to the crusaders lands. But Jerusalem stayed in the Muslim's hands.
One of the crusades goals was to protect Christian Pilgrims while they traveled to the Holy Land of Palestine. At first, Muslim caliphs had allowed Christian pilgrims to visit holy places, but then, the Fatimid Arabs started to kill pilgrims and destroying churches. Soon, Seljuk Turks took Jerusalem from the Fatimid's. They harassed pilgrims and marched to Constantinople. The Byzantine Emperor called Pope Urban II for help for them.
Crusaders tried to capture Jerusalem, and they did. After many deaths from the Turks and the unprepared voyage, the first crusade was a military success. They caught the Muslim kingdoms by surprise. The Middle East Muslims were too split up and divided to resist the crusades.
We have suffered many trials and tribulations! Most were killed by the Turks! Some died because they were not prepared for the voyage! But, we will prevail! We will conquer the Holy Land!
I, Saladin, have grown stronger and benefited from this crusade. Even though kings and queens have joined, they have failed because their leaders have argued, and because the crusades were not able to gain the local's support that was needed due to their cruelty and disrespect. Because of that, I have recaptured Jerusalem! Hurrah!
We should sign a degree stating that we will end the third crusade.
We decide to sign a law that will end the third crusade. Christian pilgrims were free to travel, and Saladin agreed to respect crusader lands. But Jerusalem remained in Muslim hands. Signed by Saladin and Richard I
I agree, on some terms...
The fourth crusade never reached the Holy Land. They looted Christian cities to try to fund their campaign. Crusaders stormed Constantinople. They smashed the Christian icons, stole relics, and attacked women. The pope was furious. He wrote that the crusaders killed the innocent. Catholic Christians were never forgiven by the Byzantines.
You embarrass me!
A popular crusade so-called Children's crusade movement swept through Germany and France. It brought poor people of all ages. Sadly, the majority never got further than Italy. Although several more crusades were launched, the crusaders were soon slowly forced out of the Holy Land. Finally, Egyptian Muslims defeated the last crusader state in 1291.
