  • Mr. Covey's Farm
  • It was January 1st, 1833, a slave named Frederick Douglass has been trasnported to a plantation, belonging to a white man named Covey.
  • Mr Covey's farm
  • Covey whips the poor young man with his long and agonizing whip. Everyday Covey would come to Douglass while he was working and start lashing him with the tool.
  • Get to work!
  • Douglass needed to escape the whipping. The dancing of the trees in the wind seemed like a safe haven in contrast to the painful crackles Douglass recieves on a daily basis.
  • Crunch, crunch, crunch, as Douglass was running through the woods, he came across a friend of his named Sandy, who was on his way to meet with his free wife. He offers for Douglass to tag along
  • Sandy and Douglass discussed his situation. The wise owl then gave him some advice, "Come with me into the woods. We will find a root, you must always carry it on your right side. In this way you will never be whipped by a white man again."
  • When Douglass came back to the plantation, he found that his root did not work. Covey still kept on whipping Douglass.
