  • Francis Scott Key was a volunteer to aid the General. He watched as the British bombarded the fort and saw the flag still flying above it which inspired him to write the Star Spangled Banner.
  • On December 24, 1814, the Treaty of Ghent was signed to end the war. All conquered land was to be returned, and commissions were planned to settle the boundary of the United States and Canada. After the Treaty, they were never able to put an end to the British impressment of American sailors.
  • Andrew Jackson led a poorly equipped, small army to victory against 8,000 British troops at the battle of New Orleans. He was known as a hero and then was declared the seventh president of the US. At this time both troops were unaware the treaty was signed.
