  • The Indus Valley
  • Where is the Indus Valley?
  • The Indus Valley is in modern-day Pakistan and India and is by the Indus River. The ancient civilization lasted for about 800 years from about 2700 BCE to 1900 BCE.
  • Most people lived in the lower part of their village. Also, most homes had a flat roof as people liked to spend their time there. They were made of mud bricks.
  • A lot of houses had windows and one to a dozen rooms. Poor citizens lived in small homes, the rich people in larger homes.
  • In the city of Mohenjodaro, there was an advanced sewer system to remove waste water from homes.
  • There was clay pipes underground that connected to the sewer system.
  • Everybody, rich or poor, had bathrooms.
  • Mohenjodaro's Citadel's most dramatic feature was the Great Bath, a pool made of waterproof brick.
  • Archaeologists think the Indus people might have used the Great Bath for religious rituals because bathing rituals are important in hinduism.
  • People enjoyed bathing and washing in the Great Bath on hot days, since the water was cool.
  • Many small stone seals have been found in the ruins of the Indus Valley.
  • Most seals show buffalo, bulls, tigers, elephants, rhinoceros, fish, and crocodiles. People may have worn them as charms or pressed into wax to mark goods.
  • These seals were carved with pictographs, and hundreds of them have been discovered but archaeologists don't know what they mean.
  • The Indus people traded with Mesopotamia and China.
  • They traded different metals and gems like gold, silver and lapis lazuli.
