We need a more representative form of government.
In the late 17 seventeen hundreds the French people got sick of the nobles and rich having all the power.
we swear to keep meeting until reform has been achieved.

France was in a very bad financial situation due to all the expenses of war; so he had no choice but to tax the nobles. (1786)
Clearly, the nobles were not happy about it, and a meeting of the estates-general was called. All 3 estates agreed that they needed a change, but some did not want to assume the consequences that this came with
The 3rd estate felt unheard in the estates-general; so they formed their own comity, the National Assembly. King Luis would not let them inside the palace to have their meeting, so they had it in a tennis court, where they took an oath.
Most of the clergy and some nobles also joined the N.A.
On July 14th 1789 the revolutionaries took the Bastille, a prison in Paris. This sent a strong political message to the king and marked the start of the French Revolution.
After decades of exploitation, peasants all over the country started revolting openly against the government. They burned the houses of tax collectors and the elite, and even murdered some of them.
