- In Upper Mesopotamia, the rainfall was reliable enough that farmers didn't have to do much irrigation.They also had access to mountains and forests, where they could hunt for game and cut down trees for wood.
- Mesopotamians were polytheistic; they worshipped several major gods and thousands of minor gods. Each Mesopotamian city, whether Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian or Assyrian, had its own patron god or goddess. Each Mesopotamian era or culture had different expressions and interpretations of the gods.

- They did not have a centralized government then but were divided into several smaller regions. The kings ruled over the city-states and were prone to internal fighting.
- The Mesopotamians made many technological discoveries. They were the first to use the potter's wheel to make better pottery, they used irrigation to get water to their crops, they used bronze metal and later iron metal to make strong tools and weapons, and used looms to weave cloth from wool.
