Süžeeskeem Tekst

  • Narcissus is born from the loveliest of the nymphs. If he were to live a long life, a prophecy forewarned that he "not discover himself."
  • A nymph, Echo, angers Juno, queen of the gods, who punishes her. As punishment, Echo could only repeat the last of what is spoken and return what she hears.
  • Echo sees Narcissus and falls in love. Narcissus rejects her and scorned, Echo wastes away until only her voice remains.
  • Narcissus comes across a spring and quenches his thirst. Peering into the water, he is entranced by his own reflection. When he reaches out to embrace his image, it disappears.
  • Saddened, Narcissus wastes away from unrequited love. Upon his last words, he said "Goodbye" in Latin, and all Echo could do was echo back, "valē."
  • His sister Naiads and brother Dryads mourned Narcissus and instead of a body, they came upon a flower with white pedals surrounded by a yellow heart.
