  • My NAMEMy Name is April MccleanMy name was given to me from my father. My parents were clueless as to what to name me and it was not until my mother was in the delivery room, that my father decided he wanted to name me April, the month in which his favorite season, spring, took place.
  • My NeighborhoodMy neighborhood is quite big actually. It is highly immense with Caribbean culture, but is very diverse. As a person of Caribbean descent I appreciate this aspect of my community so much because of the sense of home my family and I have always felt. There isn't an excessive amount of nature in my neighbor but we do have some trees and we all tend to our front lawns. My favorite area in my neighborhood is the park I live two blocks away from. I visit it often to walk my dog and always feel a sense of tranquility there.
  • My Favorite Childhood gameOne of my favorite games to play when I was a young child was the game Just Dance. My entire family was obsessed with the game and every year for Christmas a new game would drop. At least two of us would buy the new game and we would play for hours. I remember those moments as being such a joyful time for my family.
  • My Most Positive School MemoryA positive memory I have for my school experience would be every year of elementary school. I remember I got into the gifted program in 1st grade and I remained in the program until my fifth grade year when I graduated. I remember the work was not easy but I always tried really hard because I saw how happy it made my mother and I wanted to continue making her proud.
  • A Time I Got In TroubleA time I got into a lot of trouble was when I was at school and I was roughhousing with a classmate of mine for a piece of gum that he had taken from me. When I accidentally hit my head on the wall and cracked my front tooth. I felt so embarrassed and my father came up to the school and he was very upset that I destroyed my perfect teeth over a piece of gum. After that incident I had to go through a series of painful surgeries in order to get my teeth fixed and to this day I’m still not happy with the results, so it’s something I regret to this day.
  • A Special Family MemberA special family member I hold dearest to my heart would be my grandmother. My siblings and I grew up very close to her as she lives two houses down from our home. When my parents would be at work she would cook for us, do our hair, take care of us and give us great advice. My siblings and I would spend all our summers with her and although we didn’t always want to be there looking back at it I appreciate the time that I spent with her and everything she taught me. In recent years she has been diagnosed with dementia and things have not been the same, she is no longer able to vocalize her emotions, but my past experiences with her will always soothe my heart and I hope that one day I can hear her voice again.
  • The Birth of Someone SpecialThe birth of my niece Royal Lily has really changed me more than I thought it would. Before she came into this earth I did not ever desire to have a child. But helping my sister raise her and watching her grow so beautifully and swiftly has really made me have a change of heart. When I experience times of depression and I feel like giving up I think of my niece and the example I would want to set for her and continue to push forward. She is truly the light of my family.
  • Advice From an AdultAdvice my mother has given to me since I was a young girl was “Never settle for working underneath someone.” My mother came to America as an immigrant and had to work very hard for everything she had. She often expressed how sorry she was for all the long hours she had to work in order to provide for us. As she watched the world change and entrepreneurship sky rocket the lives of many families, she always encouraged my sisters and I to pursue a career, but also have a business of our own. Today I am in the process of starting my own hair business and my older sister has a candle making business.
  • A Happy Time I Experienced Going to Work
  • A time I felt joy going to work was recently at the junior high school where I am a paraprofessional. The community in which the school is located is extremely impoverished and many of the children and their families do not have much. One student in particular expressed to me that she had low self esteem and her parents were too busy with her other siblings to properly address her insecurities. She expressed that she really wanted to go to prom but her parents could not afford a dress for her. At home my sister and I had our old Junior high school prom dresses we were keeping for memories and I decided to bring the dresses with me to school and offer them to the student. She was so happy and immediately picked the dress I had worn to prom for her dress of choice. I felt an overwhelming feeling of joy that I was able to do something to boost her confidence and also take some burden off of her parents.
