- The Cell Theory is an important theory that was developed between 1665 to 1830 by multiple scientists. They ultimately concluded that there were three parts that should be included. They are that all living organisms are composed of one or more cells, cells are the basic unit of structure and function, and cells come from preexisting cells.
- Hello! I am Robert Hooke. I was born on July 18th, 1635 in the United Kingdom. I am the man who discovered and popularized cells. I was looking under my microscope one day with a silver cork under it. I noticed little boxes that were divided so nicely. They reminded me of the rooms that monks lived in, so I decided to refer to them as cells. This name stuck, and it is why cells are called cells. I was also a very good architect, and I designed some famous buildings.
- Hello! I am Robert Brown. I was born on December 21st, 1773 in the United Kingdom. I was looking at some cells one day and I discovered a big round circle in a lot of them. I decided that this should be called the nucleus. That is why that round important organelle is called a nucleus. I also observed the way that microscopic particles move, which today is known as Brownian Motion.
- Hello! I am Theodor Schwann. I was born on December 7th, 1810 in Germany. I discovered that all animals are made out of cells. This idea contributed to the part in the Cell Theory that says, "All living things are composed of one or more cells." Also, some of the cells in the peripheral nervous system are named after me! They are called Schwann Cells.
- Hello! I am Matthias Schleiden. I was born on April 5th, 1804 in Germany. I discovered that all plants are made out of cells. This matched up with my friend Theodor Schwann's discoveries of all animals having cells. I also discovered pepsin, which is a digestive enzyme.
- Hello! I am Rudolf Virchow. I was born on October 13th, 1821, in Poland. I discovered that all cells come from preexisting cells. This is one of the key parts in the cell theory. I also invented the modern method of autopsy.
