  • Theme Three: Prejudice
  • Example One
  • So what I have insomnia and my car started working all of the sudden? It doesn't mean I'm an alien!
  • Example Two
  • I swear, I didn't know it was him! I thought he was the monster! It's dark, I couldn't see him!
  • Charlie, You shot Pete!! You killed him!!
  • It's Pete Van Horn!!
  • Prejudice is the act of criticizing someone or something before looking into it. Prejudice has a big role in our society and on Maple Street. Prejudice can lead to betrayal, distrust, trouble, and fear, like in the Monsters are due on Maple Street.
  • Example Three
  • I don't know Don, but it came very close
  • Steve, what do you think that was?
  • In this scene, Les Goodman is being swarmed by a crowd of neighbors who claim he's an alien. The neighbors judge him specifically due to the incident prior, where his car automatically started when all other cars in Maple Street . They also learn of his insomnia disorder and judge him for that too. These neighbors are prejudging him therefore creating prejudice towards Les.
  • Theme Four: People as Wild Animals.
  • This is the aftermath of Charlie shooting Pete. Before this Charlie, Steve, Don, and the other neighbors encounter a shadowy figure who they believe is the monster. Instead of checking to see if it's really the monster, Charlie assumes that the silhouette is the monster, snatches a shotgun out of Don's hands, and kills the shadowy figure. When Charlie learns the silhouette belonged to Pete, he learns that his prejudice feeling of the silhouette got Pete killed.
  • Example One
  • GET OFF MY BOY!!
  • I know it's you, you little brat!!
  • Honey, I think our neighbors are turning mad.
  • I know sweetheart, I know
  • The theme of prejudice in the story dates back all the way to the beginning. Once the strobe of light hits Maple Street, people already start to jump to conclusions on what started this. This pre judging becomes very dangerous as the story progresses.
  • It could've been a meteor, maybe a power outage
  • Too close for my money.
  • Maybe it was a monster. In the comics I read, this always happens.
  • Humans are no doubt one of the most civilized species on the planet. Sometimes we manage to maintain order and live normally. However, we are humans; we can turn chaotic and act like wild animals in strange conflicts. Wild animals in the sense of losing our common sense when feeling provoked or scared. This is seen with many different characters throughout the story.
  • HELP US TRACK DOWN JADEN!!
  • I always knew there was something off about you!!
  • Now, the neighbors of Maple Street have turned into savages. Neighbors against neighbors, beliefs vs beliefs. Maple Street's orderly civilians with rational thought have turned into unsteady psychopaths. Therefore, they have psychologically become wild animals.
