- The Germans come into Elies small town of Sighet and at first they seem inviting "The officer staying with out Neighbor seemed nice" (Weisle 9) but soon the jews are quartered off and soon told that they are going to be leaving soon.
- Chapter 4
- The Jews are finally moved into trains or "Cattle cars" and a german officer tells then that they are now under the authority of the German Army (Weisle 23)
- Chapter 5
- Elie and his family arrive at their destination, a place named Auschwitz. "One thing that I will never forget is when we got to the camp their was a German officer shouting eight words, Men to the right women to the left. I will never forget these words." (Weisle 28)
- Elie begins to get more comforatable at the camp because of his prolonged stay, this leads him to get to know people and the guards do not like this. Elilezers Kapo says "An ordinary inmate does not have the right to mix into other people's affair. One of you does not seem to understand this point. I shall therfore try to make him understand clearly, ones and for all" (Wiesel 57)
- Elie and his father get more accussumed to the difficult camp life however hope keeps them alive with rumors of the russian army liberating them soon. "The red army was racing towards Buna; it was only a matter of hours" (Weisle 80)
