  • Don't nobody yell, just back up slow and quiet to the ladder and climb up to the loft.
  • ROAR!!!!
  • ROAR!!!!
  • Person v. Person
  • Oh Betsy, you wouldn't!
  • We're all working like black slaves, is what! I've half a mind to sign the blooming petition!
  • Person v. Society
  • You talk like a preacher.
  • Then you ain't a slave?
  • Well, I am, or rather, I was.
  • Some have considered me a slave.
  • A bear breaks into the cabin looking for food, and Lyddie leads her family to safety. She then conflicts with the bear to try and get it out. The bear is a part of nature, so the conflict is Person v. Nature.
  • Amelia and Betsy are arguing about the workers conditions in the mill. Betsy wants better conditions and thinks about joining Diana in signing the petition and Amelia is warning her not to mess with the authorities.
  • Ezekial is a runaway slave hiding in Lyddie's cabin. He is seen by society as a slave who has no worth, but he opposes their views and believes he is equal to everyone.
