- in 1840 Henry Oliver was born into iron, when he turned the age of two his family settled in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania.
- Oliver worked at various jobs until 1861 when he served in the civil war.
- In 1863, he formed a partnership with William J. Lewis and John Phillips. To manufacture nuts and bolts on a small scale.By 1880 two of his brothers joined.By this time the company was one of largest manufacturers of iron in the US.
- in 1888 the company went under the name of Oliver Iron and Steel Company. Oliver helped to develop improved processes for steel making. He also improved and designed a blast furnace
- much of his time was spent make new railroad routs for Pittsburgh. He also developed the steel freight car.
