- The purpose of Banquo as the foil character is to highlight the different traits of Macbeth. Macbeth and Banquo have very different personalities and objectives throughout the play. These different traits highlight Macbeth's malicious character. Banquo throughout the play keeps his good morals, while Macbeth abandoned his morals. Macbeth would do anything to gain more power, while Banquo is okay not gaining power and listens to his conscience. In addition, Macbeth trusted the witches about the prophecy, which shows his willingness to believe he has to do something about his prophecy. Banquo is more skeptical about the witches and the prophecy. He is more of a rational thinker because he isn't trusting the witches and believe they are creating trouble. This highlights Macbeth's more out-of-the-ordinary mindset.
