The US ended up getting involved the Vietnam War in order to stop the spread of communism, however foreign policy, economic interest, and national fears also played a role in the US involvement.
in the end it was a good thing that the United States got involved in the war because they helped secure a victory for Vietnam and their independence. And they also prevented communism from spreading and taking over
Ho Chi Minh created Vietminh which united communists and non communists, in an effort to expel the Japanese. Soon after they were created the United States started to send aid to the Vietminh army.
Then in 1945 Japan surrendered to the allies in 1945 which made them give up control of Indochina. Ho chi Minh then declared Vietnams independence. But France did not want to loose a former colony, so troops returned to Vietnam and in 1946 sent the Vietminh into hiding.
as the fighting escalated France had to turn to the United States for help, which put US officials in difficult decisions because the US was not in favor of colonialism, but also did not want Vietnam to fall to communism
The United States however felt that if they did not get involved to help Vietnam and they were to fall to communism then all the surrounding Southeast countries were going to also fall to communism. This was called the Domino Theory.
