  • Now, we're going to have Max's dad tell us about his job!
  • Hi kids! I'm Mr. Flounder and I'm a marine biologist!
  • 2. My daily routine consists of analyzing the sea life and how they function in an ecosystem, how humans and invasive species affect the ecosystem, collecting samples of wildlife, testing and treating disease, brainstorming ideas, writing papers and finally presenting any findings to the public on how to solve issues like plastic in the ocean.
  • 1. I know about most things in the sea
  • 1. In class you might have learned there are two types of cells, prokaryotes which don't have a nucleus and eukaryotes which do and carry their genetic makeup (DNA) in the nucleus.
  • 2. In marine biology, we analyze how prokaryotes which are mainly bacteria and eukaryotes which are organisms like us interact. For example, plankton a prokaryote decomposes eukaryotic animal waste which is good for the ecosystem.
  • 1. In an ecosystem though, there are many things which need to be monitored and maintained. In class you might have learned how to calculate geometric, logistic and exponential population growths to determine the future population of a species.
  • 2. We marine biologists use these methods to keep track of a species' population so we can bring down a rapidly increasing population or preserve an endangered one.
  • 1. If a population gets too small however, it can lead to inbreeding which lessens the genetic variation needed for survival.
  • 2. Marine biologists can observe a smaller population and how things like human pollutants can cause this population decrease or less variation.
