- Gabe is crossing the river to reach the Trade master. As he is swimming, he kept repeating that he couldn't kill someone. He was cold and scared.
- When he got to the other side he saw the Trade master behind some bushes. He didn't think he would be waiting right there. The Trade master already knew why he came.
- The Trade master offered Gabe a trade. He said he could give him a sailboat, a lake, sunshine and Claire. Gabe got mad and refused the trade.
- Gabe realizes he can use his powers. He starts veering and feeling everything the Trade master feels. He knows he is not a man but evil itself.
- Gabe now knows how he can defeat the Trade master. He tells him how all of his victims are happy and how he didn't destroy them. Since he feeds on other people's misery the master dies.
- Jonas finds Claire young again outside of the house. He is very happy since he knows Gabe has defeated the master. The book closes as we see Gabe from the distance approaching the house.
