- Teresa Moran was born in a seaside neighborhood in Seattle to second-generation Irish immigrants.
- Dan Schwartz was born in Pittsburg during World War II. His father was an engineer looking for work and found a job in Salt Lake City so the family moved there. They lived in a converted chicken coop. The problem was that he was one of the only Jews in the whole city.

- Teresa's sister was the first in her family to go to college, Stanford at that. And Teresa went four years later.
- After their junior year, both Dan and Teresa spent the summer in the Stanford DC program. And they became friends and were soon together.
- A few years later, they had both put themselves through law school. They titled these their hotdog years because it was their main source of food, and for a date, they would share an ice cream sundae.
- I can confidently say that my grandparents truly experienced the American Dream.
