- During the late 17th century, French explorers, missionaries and fur traders arrived in Chicago and they interacted with the Potawatomi Native Americans.
- In 1779, the first permanent settlement was built in Chicago by the Chicago River.

- In 1829, Chicago had a population of less than 100.
- In the 1830s, the Yankee entrepreneurs used the area as a transportation hub.
