  • In the poem, she relates love to nature and indicates that it can and can't do certain things. She attempts to to lessen the importance of love by comparing it to things we need to survive. It builds up the theme that even though love isn't something you need to live, it provides you the happiness and desire that later becomes important in life.
  • Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink.
  • Using the word "Yet", introduces the turn which shifts the meaning of this poem. The writer is able to create doubt in her own theory that love lacks value. This line is written as if the writer is having a hard time understanding that it could be the case.
  • Yet many a man is making friends with death
  • Juxtaposition is when you compare two different things. Throughout the poem “Love Is Not All,” The author uses juxtaposition to differentiate love from human needs. In the first lines, she contrasts love with meat and drink. Besides, the octave and sestet are juxtaposed. In the octave, the speaker presents her cynical view of love. While, in the sestet, she disregards all the drawbacks of love and implies she would not trade off love for peace or physical wants.
  • Juxtaposition
  • The turn In Line 6 of "Sonnet 30" by Edna St. Vincent Millay, changes after this line . Before this turn the poem focuses on the notion that love is only an emotion the can't help you in any real-life situation. Afterwards, Millay begins to speak in first person to have her opinion on the issue. I believe that the author uses the Shakespearean Sonnet, consisting of three quatrains and one couplet towards the end. She begins by stating everything that love isn't and how men kills themselves over love. She changes her mind about love towards the end of the poem that she might trade love away but goes against that. This becomes the turning point of "Love is Not All".
  • In this line, she remembers her past life along with the decisions that she used to make, and the "resolution" that they had. We can speculate that her decisions were swayed by the sheer will of her partner.
  • Mom's life is so interesting.
  • Or nagged by want past resolution's power
  • From the line "trading the memory" she is considering trading it out for human needs such as food. So she may want to exchange her love to gain something else. This helps build up the theme because she had a negative view of love at the beginning but now she is more open to it.
  • Or trade the memory of this night for food.
  • Theme: This poem is the author's thoughts on how humans suffer for love. It begins with all the things that love isn't. But at the end, she knows she can trade her love but decides on not doing so.
