- The 15th Amendment granted all African American men over the age of 18 the right to vote.

- 13th Amendment (1865)
- Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
- The 13th Amendmentofficially made slavery illegal in all states. African Americans could no longer be held as slaves and were free to live their lives as people and not as property.
