- My wife is here visiting her folks, I came here to pick her up.

- Her name's Lydia, we got married a few years after I went to New York. Now we have a daughter named Suzella who is 15.
- While putting more wood in the fire, Uncle Hammer asks Cousin Bud about why he is here.
- But things didn't work out between the both of us.
- Cousin Bud says that he came to pick up his wife from visiting her folks, but then Mama questions him because she thought that his wife was a northern girl.
- But I do ask of you to bring Lydia and Suzella here so I can meet them.
- Cousin Bud explains to the family how he got married to his wife, Lydia, when he went to New York, and now they have a daughter named Suzella who is now 15.

- Cassie has a flashback to when Mr. John Henry Berry had been burnt to death for supposedly flirting with a white woman.
- Maybe this is for the good of us. This could maybe lead to blacks and white bonding and turning equal.
- Cousin Bud talks about how his daughter is able to be considered "White," and he feels doubtful about what he said.

- Uncle Hammer gets extremely aggravated with Bud.
- Uncle Hammer rethinks about what just happened.
- Mama tries to comfort Bud after all that happened to him that day.
