  • The major cause of the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This set of off a chain of events that would lead up to the start of World War One.

  • Central Powers and Allied Powers
  • The Central Powers consisted of the German Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Ottoman Empire and Kingdom of Bulgaria joined in later. •The Allied Powers were the French Republic, the British Empire and the Russian Empire. Italy joined in later.
  • America's Part in the War
  • Initially, America was supposed to stay neutral during the war but Wilson suggested Germany’s violation of its pledge to suspend unrestricted submarine warfare in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean, as well as its attempts to persuasively lead Mexico into an alliance against the United States, as his reasons for declaring war. On April 6, 1917 the U.S. officially declared war on Germany.

  • When attacks were ordered, Allied soldiers went “over the top,” climbing out of their trenches and crossing no-man’s-land to reach enemy trenches. They had to cut through belts of barbed wire before they could use rifles, bayonets, pistols, and hand grenades to capture enemy positions. A victory usually meant they had seized only a few hundred yards of shell-torn earth at a terrible cost in lives. Wounded men often lay helpless in the open until they died. Those lucky enough to be rescued still faced horible sanitary conditions before they could be taken to proper medical facilities. Between attacks,the snipers, artillery, and poison gas caused misery and death. how technology was useful In World War II, continual advancements in technology were mandatory to maintain a competitive edge over the enemy. While technological advancements were made prior to the war, other developments were a direct result of the trials and errors suffered during the war.some things that really helped /helped The discovery of penicillin, one of the world’s first antibiotics, marks a true turning point in human history — when doctors finally had a tool that could completely cure their patients of deadly infectious.
