  • Asha de Vos is a marine biologist who specializes in researching and working with marine mammals, most specifically whales. She received a degree from the Universities of St.Andrews and Oxford, and a PhD from the University of Western Australia. Asha oversees the Sri Lankan Blue Whale Project, which is the first long-term study on blue whales within the northern Indian Ocean
  • One important thing that whales provide for the ecosystem, is their poop. Their poop causes phytoplankton to grow on the surface of the waters, which is a main food source to all species.
  • When the whale’s carcasses release to the sea floor, they provide nutrients and food to the marine life on the bottom. Also, when it ups up floating to the surface, their carcasses also provide food source and nutrients for animals above the surface.
  • A while ago, when hunters were killing whales off, they didn’t realize how much they meant to the ecosystem. When there was a decrease in whales, it was discovered that some species became extinct due to that whales’ carcasses were a primary food source for the now extinct marine animals.
  • They help eliminate greenhouse house gases to prevent global warming. Whales have a positive impact on the ecosystem which is beneficial to us humans.
  • SAVE THE WHALES
  • Ashe de Vos using the term “Save the Whales” to show that it is not just about their beauty, but their importance to the entire world.
