  • Langston Hughes was born on February 1, 1902, in Joplin, Missouri. His parents seprated soon after birth, so he went to live with his maternal grandmother.
  • First Poems
  • Langston's Grandma told Langston about his family's past and story's. One story was about his uncles and how they were called the Buffalo boys by Native Americans because of their hair.This was a important phase of his life, for this opened his mind to story's and black people.
  • Traveling The World
  • When Langston was twelve, his grandma passed, so he moved to Lincoln, Illinois, to live with his mother and new husband. In Lincoln, he was elected class poet and finished elementary school. He attended Central High school. He wanted to go to college, but couldn't afford it
  • DEATH
  • Hughes went to visit his father by train. On the train, he created his first official poem, The Negro Speaks of River. After a year, Lanston returned to the U.S and started college at Columbia University, in 1921. He left after one year.
  • Lanston wanted to travel the world. In 1923, he joined the crew of a bout bound for Africa. He worked as the cook. When they arrived, he traveled through Africa and Europe. During this time, he wrote story's and poems, and sent them to America to be published. Langston returned to the U.S. in 1924.
  • Langston died of cancer on May 22, 1967. He never married or had children. His house is now a landmark.
