- In “To Build A Fire”, the man underestimates the harsh enviornment around him and ends up facing the consequences for it. Nature proves to be much more unpredictable and dangerous than the man deemed it to be.
- Fire is taunting.
- The man considers himself manly and better than the others despite their warnings about venturing out in such condition because he associates his worth with how much he willing to “brave”. However his ignorance and foolishness ends up hurting him in the end.
- Man is selfish.
- Despite the man being a functioning adult, in “To Build A Fire” London depicts the dog as inherently more aware and acknowledging of its environment. Due to this the dog ends up surfing the harsh environment whereas the man ends up dead.
- Dog is more aware.
- The fire taunts the man for his initial overconfidence in thinking he could handle such weather. In the end nature holds power over the man .
- The man is more willing to sacrifice the dog than get them both to a safe place showing his disregard for nature and living beings except for himself.
- After the dog gets wet due to the water it immediately buries itself in snow in an attempt to warm up because compared to the man who thinks he can over power nature, the dog recognizes that in order to survive it needs to work with nature not against it.
