- Mateo and Rufus receive a call from Deathcast from 12 a.m. to 1 a.m. in the first chapter of the book. Mateo was in his room, while Rufus was beating up his ex-girlfriend's lover with Tagoe and Malcolm.
- Mateo and Rufus both get the Last Friends app in the end. They meet there and instantly become friends. They spoke on the phone once before agreeing to meet for the day.

- Last Friends
- Rufus and Mateo spend a lot of the day with Lidia, Mateo's childhood friend. They did a lot. Rufus and Mateo visited Mateo's dad in the hospital and all three of them made memories at Make-A-Moment and the World Travel Arena.
- Mateo, Rufus, Lidia, and The Plutos (Aimee, Tagoe and Malcolm) all go to the club to sing karaoke and have fun. Rufus and Mateo go up to the stage to sing American Pie by Don McLean. The fun is short-lived because Peck and his gang show up to try and kill Rufus for jumping him before.
- Mateo and Rufus raced back to Mateo's house after fleeing the club. Mateo had gotten up in the middle of the night to prepare tea, despite their agreement to stay in bed for the rest of the night. It had caught fire, and Rufus had arrived too late. They were both taken to the hospital to assist in the treatment of the patients, but Mateo had died.
- Rufus went to Mateo's dad's room to leave a note for him if he were to wake up. After that, while he was walking back, he listened to the video of Mateo singing before walking into the road.
