Baba has been diagnosed with cancer and refuses treatment. Amir is going to lose his father and is scared for what his life will lead to.

"Looking at Soraya's smiling face in that mirror, in the momentary privacy of the veil, I whispered to her for the first time that I loved her" (Hosseini 171).
This was Soraya and Amir's first time ever alone, sitting under a white cloth when Amir told Soraya he loved her for the first time and she began blushing.

"[I] couldn't explain why [you cannot] have kids. And, apparently, that wasn't unusual. It is called 'unexplained infertility'" (Hosseini 185).
"Adoption" (Hosseini 186).
Soraya and Amir were told they could not have kids and that it was time to consider adoption. Because of Afghan tradition, adoption was not always preferred because the child would not be part of the family's blood. Soraya and Amir were devasted.
