  • In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain. Throughout there was an influx of American settlers into Texas, with Mexico allowing slaveholding settlers to live there, they adopted Mexican citizenship, Catholicism, and spoke Spanish. but, many settlers did not comply with these conditions. In 1829, Mexico banned slavery and prohibited further American settlement in Texas, wanting more control.

  • In 1835-1836, settlers in Texas rebelled against Mexican rule, declaring independence and sparking a full-scale war, which the Texans won, establishing the Republic of Texas. Mexico refused to recognize Texas' independence or its border at the Rio Grande. Between 1836 and 1845, Texas was recognized as an independent nation by the U.S., Britain, France, and the Netherlands, but not by Mexico. In 1845, Texans voted to join the United States, leading to Texas' annexation as the 28th state.

  • In January 1846, U.S. troops occupied territory on the north bank of the Rio Grande, along the U.S.-Mexico border. In April 1846, Mexican troops crossed the Rio Grande and clashed with American military forces. In May 1846, the U.S. Congress approved President Polk's request to declare war on Mexico. This marked the beginning of the Mexican-American War.
