"Success is a function of persistence and doggedness and the willingness to work hard for twenty-two minutes to make sense of something that most people would give up on after thirty seconds" (246).
Although most people think success is just smarts and luck, it takes a lot of work. the most successful people would never give up simply because something is difficult. what truly defines success is willingness to work hard.
"The school year in the United States is, on average, 180 days long. The South Korean school years 220 days long. The Japanese school year is 243 days long" (260). In the US we are constantly competing to keep good grades and increase our education. However, it seems that no matter what we do, we are stuck behind countries like South Korea and Japan. this may have to do with how much children learn. In the US, over summer break many kids play ands watch tv, without ever picking up a book or continuting their education. they dont gain and sometimes lose knowledge of serious years. countries like Japan and South Korea keep a more constant lerning environment so that this is prevented. if we were to increase our school year with more short periodic breaks and decrease summer break, it would beenfit students more,
Skin color can have an effect of success. as bad as it sounds, this is true across the globe. the author closes out the book by telling a story of his own heritage. he explains his family history and how as generations went by, the lighter each family members skin color was, the better they were treated. the authors great-great-great-grandmother was a slave. but, she had a son with lighter skin, which helped him to get out of slavery. and this cycle continued. although it doesn't seem like this would be a huge factor to success, it really can be. the authors mother became successful in her career and as ,did he. they can accredit all of this success to themselves, but that wouldn't be true. their past, ancestors, and all of their choices and opportunities led them to where they're standing today. and this is true of each and every one of us.
