  • Around the early 1800s, the Spanish owned much of the South American territory, including modern day Peru. Peru is a country located near northwestern South America. The current dictator of France, Napoleon Bonaparte's invasion of Spain inspired many of the Spanish colonies in South America to claim independence. This would include Peru later on but due to conservative aristocracy and military concentration, independence would not be their main focus point at the time.
  • Among these Spanish colonies were Argentina, and a man named Jose dé san Martin aimed to take control of upper Peru and also gain independence for Argentina and Chile. He is the primary hero involved with the Peruvian revolution.
