- It was the usual start of day in Nagrebcan. Baldo had just woken up and played with his favorite puppy, the black spotted one among the five.
- Baldo went back outside to play with the puppies. His brother, Ambo, just woke up and was eating an unpeeled banana.
- The sun had risen high above the Katayaghan hills, and warm, golden sunlight filled Nagrebcan. The mist on the tobacco fields had completely dissolved.
- Baldo leave to buy coal
- No.
- There is the fire, mother. Is father awake already?
- But the skin is tart. It tastes bad.
- You foolish boy, remove the skin.
- You are not eating it.
- I will not. It is not your banana.
- Ambo played with the other puppies, but he soon grew tired of them. He wanted the black-spotted one. He sidled close to Baldo and put out a hand to caress the puppy nestling contentedly in the crookof his brother’s arm. But Baldo struck the hand away...
