Charlie Gordon, a 32 year old with an IQ of 68, who has dreamed of being smart his entire life. Because of his learning disability & willingness to learn, he is chosen for an experiment that will boost his IQ.
The operation performed by Dr. Strauss is a success; Charlie's IQ skyrockets and his intelligence quickly surpasses that of his own doctors and experts. Charlie starts feeling unhappy and distant from others due to his intelligence.
Charlie is brought to a scientific convention, where he and Algernon and showcased. He is soon upset by the way the experiment is being presented, and makes a scene when he describes the ethical and mechanical issues of the experiment. He goes back to New York and notices that Algernon is showing signs of regression.
Charlie becomes aware of his and Algernon's deterioration & directs all of his focus toward figuring out how to save himself from that fate. He works furiously and feels himself begin to revert back to who he once was. Algernon dies.
Charlie reverts back to his old self and takes up a job at the factory again. His coworkers show him some level of kindness. He cannot understand any of his old work or progress reports, and continues to live as he once did.
