  • " you are born more than a slave , you are a man with brains and dignity. "
  • It all began in 1791 in the french colony of saint dominique (later haiti ).
  • I particularly admired the writings of the french enlightenment philosophers , whom spoke of individual rights and equality.
  • After the french revolution rocked france in 1789 , the act spurred on by such enlightenment thinkers as Jean-Jacques Rousseau , the early moderate revolutionaries seriously considered the question of slavery.
  • Although the modern revolutionaries would not give in to slavery they did apply the "rights of man " to all frenchmen , including free black people and those of mixed race. And finally , the revolutionaries gave in and retracted the measure in 1791.
  • modern revolutionaries were not willing to end slavery.
  • I brilliantly led my rag - tag army of freedom fighters. I also successfully fought the french as well as invading spanish and british.
  • Toussaint became leader of the rebellion which he then became known as Toussaint L'Ouverture which stands for " the one who finds an opening).
  • Toussaint agreed to help the french army eject the british and spanish , winning 7 battles in 7 days which then led him to becoming a de facto govenor of the colony.
  • people finally got tired of all the deaths in the streets and sent maximillian robespierre to the guillotine which then ended the reign of terror.
  • By the year of 1803 , Napoleon and Toussaint agreed to terms of peace. Napoleon agreed to recognize haitian independence and Toussaint agreed to retire from public life.
  • A few months after both leaders made peace , the french then decided to invite Toussaint to come to a negotiating meeting with full safe conduct. But once Toussaint arrived the french arrested him and put him on a ship headed to france. Napoleon then ordered for Toussaint to be placed in a mountain prison where Toussaint then finally fell to his death while others carried on the fight for freedom.
