  • Juliet came back from confession with Friar Lawrence. Friar Lawrence formed her fake death plan and she was told to follow specific instructions. Juliet’s sudden happiness is all a part of Friar Lawerence's plan. She comes home looking happy but the truth is that it’s all made up so that Friar Lawrence’s plan can come to a success. Juliet lost trust in the Nurse after previous interactions so the Nurse does not know about Friar Lawrence’s plan.
  • Look, she's come home from confession with a happy look on her face.
  • In the period of this play, children were seen as inferior to their parents and they were to always do what their parents tell them to do. Their opinions did not matter and if they disobeyed their parents and went against what they were told, they were often disowned by their parents. As part of Friar Lawrence’s plan, Juliet was to obey her parents about marrying Paris. Juliet’s submission to her parents pleased them. Her obedience was needed for the plan to fall in place. Juliet knew that there was a chance that she would never marry Paris if the plan works out so she wanted to do everything correctly to be with Romeo.
  • I went somewhere where I learned that being disobedient to my father is a sin. Holy Father Lawrence instructed me to fall on my knees and beg your forgiveness. (she kneels down) Forgive me, I beg you. From now on I'll do whatever you say.
  • Capulet is happy to see that Juliet is now acting submissive and obeying his commands. Her submission about the marriage pleases him so much that he decided to move the marriage to Wednesday instead of it being on Thursday. Capulet not only does this because of his excitement for Juliet’s obedience but because he doesn’t want her to change her mind so he decides to get her to marry Paris quicker.
  • Send for the Count. Go tell him about this. I'll make this wedding happen tomorrow morning.
  • Juliet stated that she treated Paris with the proper love, while still being modest. Women in Juliet’s period were often very modest and would not openly admit their feelings for a man. Their role was to play hard to get while the man will work to get their attention. In a way, Juliet is saying that she treated Paris with the necessary lovebut she still humbled herself or showed modesty. However, this is not true because Juliet was quite mean to Paris when they met at Lawrence's cell.
  • I met the young man at Lawrence's cell. I treated him with the proper love, as well as I could, while still being modest.
  • In the period of this play, the role of a woman/wife was to be at home, raise the children, and work around the house. They were seen as inferior to men and were to conform to what society told them. They were often seen as a man’s property and have to submit to them. Therefore, when Capulet said that he will pretend to be a housewife for once, he is saying that he will take the role of a woman/wife and do what they would do to finish the wedding preparations because he has moved the wedding up one day earlier.
  • I'm not going to bed tonight. Leave me alone. I'll pretend to be the housewife for once.
  • Now that Juliet is submissive to what Capulets asks of her specifically, about her marrying Paris, Capulet is very happy. He is filled with excitement because he has taken back Juliet as his daughter and may now have a son-in-law which is Paris. Capulet is pleased that Juliet is no longer being disobedient but is obeying what he asks of her.
  • My heart is wonderfully happy because this troubled girl has been taken back and now will be married.
