- President Addams sent 3 representatives, the French sent 3 secret agents known as X,Y,Z. The plan was to ask France to stop taking their ships, but things didn't go as planned, for these agents demanded an absurd amount of money in return, stopping negotiations.

- President Addams and the Americans were furious at the story. They started recruiting an army to build new ships. They then got authorized by Congress to launch an undeclared war, capturing many French ships. After these attacks, France finally agreed to negotiate, and peace was reached.
