- Holes starts with  Stanley Yelnats IV driving to Camp Green Lake. Camp Green Lake is a dry dessert where it hasn't rained in 30 years.
- Climax
- Elya Yelnats wanted to marry a young lady named Myra Menckie. Elya needed a big pig to give to Myra's father so he could win Myra over his other contender Igor. Elya went to Madame Zeroni, a very old but wise lady, to figure out what he needed to do to get a fatter pig.  Madame Zeroni gave him a baby pig and told him to carry it up and mountain and sing a special song every day. On the last day he should carry Madame Zeroni up the mountain and sing to her. If he didn't his family would be cursed for eternity.
- Resolution
- One day Hector Zeroni, or Zero, ran away from camp because everyone thought he was stupid. Stanley was his one friend, and after a few days he chased after Zero.
- Denouement
- After a while, Stanley and Zero return to find the treasure that they think the warden has been making them dig for. Stanley has found a lip stick tube a long time ago and he returned to the hole he found it in to see if the treasure was there. Sure enough, they found the treasure.
- Stanley Yelnats
- Stanley's lawyer comes to pick Stanley up. Stanley is surprised because he didn't know he had a lawyer. It turns out he and Zero got the treasure because it had Stanley's name on it. Zero went home with Stanley and it rained for the first time in thirty years.
- Stanley reunites with his family. Hector also has a search for his mom and they find her. Then  Stanley meets Clyde Livingston his idle. Also know as "Sweet Feet".
