What was the problem?:Very long work days, terrible wages, dangerous workingconditions, and child labor were what workers fought against in the Progressive Era.
How it was solved, and who helped the cause:Workers fought back against big business by making unions, protesting, and striking. One such event was The Homestead Strike of 1892. They striked for better pay and conditions, and stood outside the factory so replacements could not enter. Their boss, Henry Frick, called the help of an armed mercenary group called the Pinkertons, which resulted in 10 deaths and several injuries. President Theodore Roosevelt helped fix the problem with laws and The Department of Commerce and Labor.
"2 workers have died in accidents today, and the boss did not even care!"
Why they fought:Imagine not having the right to vote, have your own wage, have a safe job, or be able to own property on your own. This is how women were treated before the suffrage movement. Women were considered property of their husbands, instead of autonomous human beings.
How they won and who fought:Women like Alice Paul picketedoutside the white house, and even starved themselves for their cause of suffrage. The struggle of women like Paul led to the 19th amendment and equal treatment. The women in groups like the NWSA and NWP helped women win their rights. Women in the NWSA lobbied, protested, and fought for their cause.
What was the problem:Prohibition was supposed to reduce crime, but it actually did the opposite. Because it made selling and drinking alcohol illegal, gangs and mobs would sell it on the black market, which would sell for a lot, ultimately incentivising the crime. This led to a rise in organized crime, and because it was illegal, the Government could not tax it, which lost the Government a lot of potential money.
What was done to fix the problem, and who was involved?:The Association Against the Prohibition Amendment fought against prohibition by handing out pamphlets to Americans and talking about the harm of prohibition; in fact, the AAPA handed out 1 million pamphlets to advertise their cause. The 21st amendment was passed in 1933 while Franklin D. Roosevelt was president.
