What are these so wither'd, and so wild in their attire,
Act 1 Scene 3
All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, thane of Glamis!
Speak, if you can: what are you?
All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, thane of Cawdor!
Act 3 Scene 1
I’ll call upon you straight. Abide within. It is concluded. Banquo, thy soul’s flight, If it find heaven, must find it out tonight.
Though our lives—
We shall, my lord, perform what you command us.
Act 3 Scene 4
Thou canst not say I did it. Never shake Thy gory locks at me.
Sit, worthy friends. My lord is often thus And hath been from his youth. Pray you, keep seat.
In this scene both Banquo and Macbeth are bewildered of the sigh of these three witches. Banquo cannot make out if they are even women because of their beards. Macbeth is very confused over their claims of him being king. I believe a theme shown in this scene is deception. Specifically, self-deception for Macbeth. He takes in the words from the witches very swiftly and begins to embody what they said and clearly not disagreeing with them.
All hail, Macbeth! that shalt be king hereafter!
In this scene Macbeth orders two murders to kill his friend Banquo and his son because of the witch's prophecy that Banquo's offspring will be king. The common theme throughout this whole story, ambition, is what ultimately drives Macbeth through this scene. He has no issue ordering for the murder of his friend just so he can keep his crown. The murder of king Duncan was because of lady Macbeth. However, this murder would be because of his own ambition.
At the beginning of this scene, Macbeth was confident in ordering the two murders to kill Banquo and his son. Even after one of the murders told Macbeth that his son got away, Macbeth was still ambitious that he could finish him off later. However, at the banquet Macbeth saw the ghost of Banquo. All his confidence evaporated as he started yelling at the ghost in front of the lords. Lady Macbeth tries to cover for him and after she scolds him for his lack of courage and questions his manhood.
