Each day, they rise before the sun. Thomas and Sarah pick cotton, while the children do chores. There's no time for play or learning.
1852, Georgia. The Carter family; Sarah, Thomas, and their kids Benjamin (12) and Josie (9) live in a cramped slave cabin on a cotton plantation.
At night, they come together, sing spirituals, and tell stories about hope and freedom. These moments keep them strong.
A trusted friend named Moses tells Thomas about the Underground Railroad a secret route to freedom. The family begins to dream of escape.

They find shelter in a barn owned by a kind woman named Miss Eliza. She gives them food and tells them where to go next.
Thomas and Sarah decide to run. They pack quietly and leave in the night, hearts pounding, holding their children close.
While hiding in a church basement, slave catchers search nearby. Everyone stays silent. Josie almost sneezes, but Benjamin gently stops her.
The family travels at night through woods and across rivers. They're tired, but they keep going, singing softly to stay brave.
