  • One upon a time, there was a large lady who was walking  with a large purse that had everything in it but a hammer and nails , it was about 11 o'clock at night in the streets when a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse. The strap broke with the sudden single tug the boy gave it from behind, but the boy's weight and the weight of the purse caused to loose his balance then the woman turned around and kicked him right square in his blue jeaned sitter . Then she reached down, and picked the boy from his shirt and shook him until his teeth rattled.
  • After that, she bent down to permit him to stoop and pick up her purse and said and asked him ": Now ain't you ashamed from yourself ?" He told her that he was and she asked him what did he want to do it for and he said ": I didn't aim to " , the women told him that we was lying . She noticed that his face is dirty and she wanted to wash her face this evening , she wanted to teach him wrong and right as if he was her son , she asked him if she was bothering him in the corner but he wasn't bothered. She said ":You put contact with me and it's going to last a while", and he will remember Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones.
  • Mrs.Jones stopped, jerked him in front of her , put a half nelson about his neck and continued to drag him to her house , she switched and left the door, the boy heard other roomers laughing and talking , and some doors were open so he new he and the women weren't alone , she told him to wash his face and she handled him a clean towel ,she said that she got home to make a bite of food to eat when he snatched her pocketbook. She said that they were alone at the house , and she wanted to make him some food ,but then the boy told her that he wanted a pair of blue suede shoes and that's why he snatched her pocketbook, she told him that he could've asked him.
  • After the boy washed his dirty face , he went to the lady, the water was dripping from his face , he looked at her , there was a long pause . After he dried his face and not knowing what to do next , he dried it again and turned when he found that the door was open, he could've made a dash for it down the hall and run. She said to him ": I were young once  and I wanted things I couldn't get ." There was another long pause, and she said that she had done things that she will not tell him neither god, if he didn't know, and everybody 's got something in common . She told him to sit down while she fix him something to eat.
  • In the corner of the room , there was a gas plate and an icebox , the woman did not watch the boy to see if he was going to see if he was going to run now , nor did she watch her purse. But he took care to set on the far side of the room , he didn't trust the woman not to trust him, and he didn't want to be mistrusted now . The boy asked the woman if she needed somebody to go to the store to get some milk or something ,"Don't be;ieve I do unless you just want sweet milk yourself .I was going to make cocoa out of this canned milk I got here " said the woman .She heated some lima beans and ham she had in the icebox , made the cocoa, and set the table .
  • When they were eating , she told the boy about her job in a hotel beauty shop that stayed open late ,what the work was like , and how all kinds of women came in and out. When they finished eating, the women gave the boy 10 dollars and told him to get himself some blue suede shoes , and warned him to steal from her nor nobody else because shoes got by devilish ways that will burn his feet . She led him down the hall to the front door and wished him a good night and told him to behave his self looking out into the streets as he went down the steps .The boy wanted to say something other than " Thank You ", but although his lips moved , he couldn't say that as he turned to the barren stool and looked up at the women in the door . Then she shut the door .
