  • Rising Action: a related series of incidents that build towards the point of greatest interest. The narrator doesn't like the old man's eye. It is like a vulture's eye, pale blue with a cloudy film over it. It disturbs the narrator. In the story, the narrator says "One of his eyes looked like the eye of a vulture. It was a pale blue eye with a film over it."

  • Whenever it looked at me, my blood ran cold.
  • I replaced the planks so well that no human eye could have found anything wrong.
  • Climax: the turning point. The narrator can't stand the old man's eye and decides to suffocate him which leads to the old man's heart completely stopping. The narrator decides to hide the lifeless body underneath the floor's wooden planks. In the story, the narrator says"I dragged him to the floor and pulled the heavy bed over him."
  • Search...search well.
  • They'll never know!
  • Falling Action: starts to wrap up the story. The neighbor went to the police station to say that there was a scream coming from next door. In the story, the narrator says, "Three policemen came in. A neighbor had heard a scream and had gone to the police station. These men had been sent to search the place."
