The Boer War was fought and despite winning the war, the British realized that it was essential to partner with the Boers if they were to be a successful nation.

  • In the 1960s, some members of the United Nations began to call for sanctions against South Africa—calls that grew louder in the decades that followed. Eventually, South Africa became an international outcast. In 1990, in response to international pressure and the threat of civil war, South Africa’s new president, F.W. De Klerk, pledged to end apartheid and released Mandela from prison.

  • In 1910, the Union of South Africa was formed. English and Dutch were the official languages. Within a short time, a series of repressive laws were passed. It became illegal for black workers to strike, skilled jobs were reserved for whites, and “pass laws” which restricted black movement and freedom were tightened. This was the foundation for modern apartheid.
